TRADE MISSIONS
Canadian Natural Health Products, Life Sciences, & Health Care Trade Mission to Hong Kong, August 12 - 16, 2008
This mission is designed for participation by those Canadian companies which are involved in natural health products, life sciences, and health care and are interested in expanding their business to China and Hong Kong.
Co-organized by the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong, the HKCBA and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), this mission is organized to help participants to find potential business and partnership opportunities, access to targeted business networks and first-hand market intelligence. This initiative is supported by the Canadian Advanced Foods and Materials Network (AFMNet), MonteJade Science & Technology Association, Western Canada and Western Canadian Functional Food & Natural Health Product Network (WCFN).
Highlights of the programmes include a special programme consisting of briefing session, roundtable discussion, pre-arranged one-on-one business meetings, site visits and networking activities on August 13, and participation in the International Conference & Exhibition of the Modernization of Chinese Medicine & Health Products (ICMCM) starting on August 14.
There is NO registration fee required for joining this mission. Delegates are responsible for their respective airfares, hotel accommodation and incidental expenses. Group programmes will be sponsored. Delegates are also eligible to apply for partial hotel accommodation sponsorships.

China Business Workshops at B.C. Canada Pavilion in Beijing, September 2, 2008
The Canadian Embassy in China, in partnership with the British Columbia government, is organizing a series of Doing Business in China Workshops at the B.C. Canada Pavilion in Beijing.
Canadian company representatives are invited to participate as are regional economic development representatives that are new to the Chinese market. Speakers will be drawn from among Canadian companies and services providers that have extensive experience in China. The speakers will share their perspective on the opportunities, challenges and business and political realities in China.
Each of the workshops will be made up of four one-hour sessions: China Market Entry Strategies; The Nuts and Bolts of Doing Business in China; How to Protect Your Intellectual Property in China; and, Business Opportunities in China.

Hong Kong's Inflation Outlook The mounting inflationary pressure has changed the economic landscape significantly recently. Inflation in Hong Kong surged to 11-year highs, spreading beyond food to other consumer goods and services. Non-food inflation jumped from around 2% at the beginning of the year to 4.5% in June. Chief Executive Donald Tsang unveils CAD $1.4B Relief Package Chief Executive Tsang of HKSAR has unveiled a HKD$11 billion relief package to help Hong Kong people cope with inflation. The 10-measure package include: exemption of the "maid levy" for 2 years; subsidies for households on electricity bills for 6 more months; HKD$1,000 subsidies for poor students whose families are on the dole and government subsidies - from kindergarten to university; extra 2 months rent free for tenants of public housing; and extra 2 months payments for elderly people on old age allowances. China's Growth Rate May Dip to 9.9% Economic growth in China is expected to hit 9.9 percent this year and 9.7 percent in 2009 while in emerging East Asia it will moderate to 7.6 percent in 2008 and 2009 from 9 percent in 2007 due to a global economic slowdown, sharp rise in food and energy prices and volatile financial markets, said a report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The Chinese Government Prepares to Enforce First Anti-Monopoly Law The long-awaited landmark antitrust legislation, proposed 15 years ago and passed only last year, takes effect from Aug 1. As the law's primary goal is to encourage fair competition, it is seen by investors and legal experts as a main component of China's market economy constitution.
