While governments and the general public are increasingly pursuing ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) goals, commercial corporations are also increasingly adopting ESG into their business development. This webinar is designed to use the Food Tech Sector to illustrate the ESG trend and demonstrate that ESG and business can grow together.

Our two panelists from the food tech sector, in addition to sharing their insights on how their companies have successfully incorporated ESG, will also share their Hong Kong – Canada success stories. This online event will also present the latest information on Hong Kong’s efforts in contributing to ESG, and how Canadian companies can join the Canada – Hong Kong ESG momentum.

Sonja is the newly-elected National Chair of The Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (HKCBA). She works closely with 8 HKCBA Section Presidents across Canada in providing relevant services and initiatives to members and contacts including assisting Canadian companies in diversifying their business footprints to Asia via Hong Kong.

As the Head of the Hong Kong Family in Canada, Emily leads the Canada – Hong Kong – Asia business momentum development.

Christopher Chen, Head of Business & Talent Attraction/Investment Promotion, Invest Hong Kong (Canada)

 

Chris and his IHK team in Canada have been instrumental in helping Canadian companies successfully establishing their presence in Hong Kong. Chris will share insights on Hong Kong as an ESG hub for Canadian companies to leverage.

David Yeung, Co-founder & CEO, Green Monday Group

 

David will present his Green Monday initiative, a multi-faceted social venture taking on climate change, food insecurity and public health. He will illustrate how he walks the talk through offering his company’s food products to the world’s consumers including those in Canada.

Felix Cheung, Founder and CEO, IXON Food Technology

 

Felix will present his company’s ASAP (advanced sous-vide aseptic packaging) food packaging technology, an innovative initiative that can extend the shelf life of food at room temperature for up to two years. He will also share the journey of expanding his company’s operation in Canada.

Andrew will briefly present upcoming windows of opportunity / initiatives for Interested Canadian companies to turn “thoughts” to “action” to join the Canada – Hong Kong ESG momentum.

Sonja Chong

National Chair, Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (HKCBA) and also Partner – Income Taxation, Sonja Chong Professional Corporation, CPAs

Sonja Chong (FCPA, CPA, TEP) is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a seasoned income tax practitioner conversant in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Her practice focuses on income tax planning for private corporations, high net-worth individuals, cross-border estates, business succession, immigrants and emigrants, and real estate investments.

Aside from providing value-added services to clients, Sonja has been very much involved in the educational aspects of income tax practice. From 1995 to 2007, Sonja was a member of the Editorial Board of “Taxation of Real Estate in Canada” loose leaf service, Carswell.

Sonja co-chaired the Program Committee of the Ontario Tax Conference for 8 years. She then served as a Governor of the Canadian Tax Foundation from 2004 to 2007. From 2009 to 2011, Sonja was invited to be a member of the “Joint Committee on Taxation” of CPA Canada and the Canadian Bar Association.

In year 2000, Sonja was elected a Fellow of CPA Ontario. She was also featured in the Recruitment Brochures of CPA Ontario (1997 to 2007), as well as on the websites of CPA Canada and CPA Ontario.

Over the years, Sonja has presented at over 150 income tax seminars.

In her spare time, Sonja has dedicated herself to volunteer services.

Sonja is HKCBA's National Chair. From 2000 to 2001, Sonja served as President, and has remained a Board member of HKCBA’s Toronto GTA section. Sonja also chairs WIN@HKCBA, a committee of the Toronto GTA section.

Aside from volunteering for business-focused non-profits, Sonja has also been actively involved in the cultural and social domain.

She was Chair and Co-Chair (2008 to 2017), and Treasurer (2000 to 2007) of Multilateral Cooperation Foundation (formerly Canada China Development Foundation, Canadian Foundation for Chinese Heritage Preservation), a Canadian registered charity.

Sonja was appointed by the Government of Canada to be a Director of CBC/Radio-Canada. She served from 2014 to 2016.

Sonja was a Director and Treasurer of Hong Fook Mental Health Association from 1993 to 2003. She was also a Director of the Federation of Chinese Canadian Professionals from 1992 to 1994. Sonja received the Volunteer Services Award from the Government of Ontario in 2003.

Emily Mo

Director, Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto)

Emily joined the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China in 2001 as a member of the Administrative Officer Grade. In December 2018, she took up the Director post in the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Toronto, the mandate of which is to foster closer economic trade ties between Canada and Hong Kong, and also promote bilateral cultural relations and people-to-people ties. Before that she had worked in different offices of the HKSAR Government.

Christopher Chen

Head of Business & Talent Attraction/Investment Promotion, Invest Hong Kong (Canada)

Christopher Chen is the Head of the Invest Hong Kong presence for Canada, responsible for driving foreign direct investment to Hong Kong. Prior to InvestHK, he was a senior fintech professional, leading growth and CX initiatives for multinational insurance and asset management companies throughout Canada, Europe, and Asia. Originally from Vancouver, he has lived and worked in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, The Netherlands, and Scotland.

David Yeung

Felix Cheung

Founder and CEO, IXON Food Technology

Felix Cheung is the founder and CEO of IXON, a Hong Kong foodtech company that specializes in food preservation. He is one of two inventors of advanced sous-vide aseptic packaging (ASAP), a food sterilization and aseptic packaging technology that could extend the shelf life of fresh meat and seafood at room temperature for up to two years. Felix holds a bachelor degree in mathematics, earth science and physics from Flinders University of South Australia, a master degree in food analysis and food safety management from Hong Kong Baptist University and a doctorate degree in plasma physics from University of Sydney. He has previously worked as an editor at Nature magazine for seven years.

Andrew Yui

Director, Canada, Hong Kong Trade Development Council

Andrew was appointed Director, Canada of HKTDC in July 1993. HKTDC is Hong Kong’s statutory body responsible for the promotion of international trade (imports and exports) in merchandise, services and technologies, via the Hong Kong platform. The Council works through a network of 50 offices worldwide. The HKTDC Branch Office in Canada, based in Toronto, is established to encourage and assist Canadian companies to diversify their business to Asia through Hong Kong. Since early 2020, to help Canadian companies to beat the COVID barrier, HKTDC Toronto Office has joined forces with like-minded multiplier partners like HKCBA, HKETO and many others in staging Canadian virtual missions to online Hong Kong international trade fairs and conferences. 

Joseph Chaung

President, HKCBA Toronto GTA Section and also President, C4P Inc.

Joseph is the Founder and President of C4P Inc which is specialized in product design and project development, sales and marketing of innovative products especially those in the green and alternative energy sector. With more than 30 years of experience in the product design and development industries in North America, Asia and Europe, Joseph has successfully worked with many inventors and designers in developing many new products.

Joseph has also been actively involved in many business and volunteer organisations. He is the President of the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (HKCBA) GTA Toronto Section which actively assists Canadian companies in doing business with Hong Kong and through Hong Kong with other Asian countries. He is the Founder and Immediate Past President of the Oakville Chinese Business Association, the Co-Chair of the Mississauga Community Crime Awareness Day Event for many years and a Board Member of the Mississauga Chinese Business Association. He is currently a committee member of the Peel Region Police Chief’s Advisory Committee, and a Director of Safe City Mississauga.

As a Director of the Product Innovation Technology Advisory Committee, Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, Joseph supports many Canadian university/college graduates in their start-up projects and business. He is a professional mentor for many Canadian industrial design graduates assisting and encouraging them to promote their inventions to the World.

Joseph has received many recognitions including a Canada Senate 150th Anniversary Medal, the 2019 Most Progressive Award from ACCE (Association of Chinese Canadian Entrepreneur). He was also invited by the Canadian Federal Government to join the Team Canada to China in 2015 led by then Prime Minister Steven Harper. He was also invited by the Ontario Government to join the Innovative Industrial Missions to Japan and Korea in 2015, 2017 and 2019.
